Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme that was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic: Animals in Books
Children certainly get the best of books featuring animals – animals that need saving, animals that are brave, animals that defend others… I’ve tried to add as many books for adults as I could in this list, but there are nowhere near as many.
In no particular order, below is my top ten list.
Which ones have I missed out?
Which are your favourites?

‘Watership Down’ by Richard Adams

‘Where the Wild Thing Are’ by Maurice Sendak.

‘Maus’ by Art Spiegelman.

The ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy by Philip Pullman.

‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell.

‘Lorelei’s Secret’ by Carolyn Parkhurst

‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ by C. S. Lewis.

‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E. B. White.

‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo.

‘Moby Dick’ by Herman Melville.
I do think there are many more children’s books with animals than there are adult books.

It’s incredible, isn’t it? I put my copy in the school library – it’s been borrowed so many times!

Watership Down was on my list, too! (Hope this comment didn’t go through twice. I’m on a new computer and had a glitch there. 🙂 )

Where the Wild Things Are and Charlotte’s Web are such a huge part of my childhood.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks!

My children both adored these books, and they were lovely to read aloud to them.

Good point! This is probably why I loved reading animal books as a child, but tend to avoid them as an adult. I’ve read half of these and CHARLOTTE’S WEB is also on my list today. A childhood favorite for me as well.
Happy TTT!

These are all such great choices! I love the daemons in the His Dark Materials series. It’s interesting that the Carolyn Parkhurst book has a different title than the version I read (The Dogs of Babel). It was such a good read!

You’re right! We did have a few in common. And funny enough, some of the ones that ran through my mind but didn’t make my list are on yours. Great list!!

War Horse and Charlotte’s Web were both on my list as well. I enjoyed this list, lots that I have read.

I’m reading Moby Dick at the minute so I decided not to include it. I’m enjoying it but it’s taking a long time to read.

I must admit that I read it as I book that I felt I ‘should’ read, rather than one that I particularly wanted to. Lots of nice descriptions of whales though!

Such a great list! I can’t believe I forgot to include Watership Down and Mobi Dick…

I can’t believe it! I read all but one of these. As much as I love Charlotte’s Web, AND the C.S. Lewis series, the Phillip Pullman series gets an A+ from me for the animals in it. Love the animal “souls” seen outside each person.

One of the wonderful things about being a parent has been being able to read all of these again whilst watching my children react to them for the first time. Absolute magic!

Great list and you’re so right: children definitely get the better deal when it comes to books with animals in, probably why I like children’s books so much! 😊

I’m always in favor of more adult’s books with animals, even though I somehow managed to not read any of these as a child.

All great books. I would add, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell and The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, two of my favourite books. I always include an animal in my Amanda Travels books.
