TTT: Reasons Why I Love Reading!

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme that was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week, we’re looking at reasons why we love reading.

1. Reading lets us travel when we can’t leave the house. In the last few years, I’ve been so grateful that I’ve had reading whilst we’ve been in lockdown, and I’ve been stuck in the house due to having covid myself and then when we were self-isolating when my husband was ill. I was unable to leave the house, but yet a travelled all over the world.

2. Reading allows me to live more than one life. I’m a wife, mum and teacher. My life is safe and very normal. I don’t read about characters like me, but my goodness there are a lot of more interesting lives to read about in books.

3. You can always learn something new. I don’t read much non-fiction at all, but I learn all of my history and geography through novels.

4. There’s a fabulous online reading community. Book Twitter is a fabulous place, and Book bloggers are the absolute best! I’ve finally found my place on the internet and it’s full of my people 😍

5. It takes my mind off everything else. Escapism is a wonderful thing!

6. It’s teaching me how to write. I’ve been teaching secondary school English for 19 years, and I’m finally learning how to write ‘properly’, in a style that I’d like to read myself. I’m having a go at writing my first novel, and I’m learning so much both from the books that I read and the online writing community. Who said that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

7. It makes you appreciate what you’ve got. I’m not a refugee, I’m not on trial for a murder that I didn’t commit, I’m not in an abusive relationship. And reading makes me appreciate my normal, boring life and all the things that I do have.

8. I can choose what I read depending on my mood. Like most book bloggers, I read several books at once, and my TBR pile is huge. We can fine-tune book selection to match fleeting moods here!

9. It allows me to retreat from the digital world. Unless of course I’m reading on my kindle!

10. I love sharing books and talking about them with my children and pupils. The one thing that I think I’ve always done right as a mum is to encourage them to read. I’m failing miserably with my eldest at the moment, but he had a good start, and he’ll get back to it at some point. My daughter loves reading as much as I do, and it’s a joy to share it with her. I’d like to think that my love of reading has been passed on to a good number of pupils over the years too, and that they may also be able to make their own list of things that they love about reading.

  1. That is a great list. I especially like number 7. I´m sure your love of reading has rubbed off on many of the young folks in your life. I know a couple of teachers certainly inspired me to expand my reading.

  2. Love this post. Good luck on your novel. I agree with all of your points, I really have been enjoying reading even more during these Covid Lockdowns on my island, it really allows you to just escape and enter a new world or learn something new.
